It's Here! It's finally here!
What is World Book
Night?
(You may be asking yourself this question)
World Book Night is an annual celebration dedicated to
spreading the love of reading, person to person. Each year on April 23, tens of
thousands of people go out into their communities and give half a million free
World Book Night paperbacks to light and non-readers. In 2013, World Book Night
will be celebrated in the U.S., the UK, and Ireland.
World Book Night is about giving books and encouraging
reading in those who don’t regularly do so. But it is also about more than that:
It’s about people, communities, and connections, about reaching out to others
and touching lives in the simplest of ways – through the sharing of stories.
World Book Night is a nonprofit organization. We exist
because of the support of thousands of books givers, booksellers, librarians,
and financial supporters who believe in our mission. Set for April 23 each year
to honor Shakespeare’s birthday, World Book Night was successfully launched in
the U.K. in 2011, and World Book Night was first celebrated in the U.S. in
2012. Thank you to our U.K. friends for such a wonderful idea!
Why is World Book
Night Important?
Why does World Book Night exist? Reading for pleasure
improves literacy, actively engaging emerging readers in their desire to read.
Reading changes lives, improves employability, social interaction,
enfranchisement, and can have a positive effect on mental health and happiness.
Book readers of all ages are more likely to participate in positive activities
such as volunteering, attending cultural events, and even physical exercise.
Or more simply put, books are fun – and they can be
life-changing.

I am proud and excited to say that this year I will be
participating in World Book Night as a Book Giver. I have been putting together
bags of goodies all day (since I got off from work). I have been waiting to
share this information since last week. I finally have time to announce the
book that I will be giving out this year:
**Drum Roll Please**
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
I really loved reading this book and I hope that each and
every person I hand it out to will love it just as much as I did (Review coming
soon). Here’s a little synopsis of the book:
About the Book
Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school…
again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and
the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s
Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of
them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime
suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just 10 days to find and return Zeus’s
stolen property and bring peace to a
warning Mount Olympus.
But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than
catch the true thief: He must come to terms with the father who abandoned him;
solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and
unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.
